PORTRAITS

Portraits can either be found or Made. If they are found, the photographer has done nothing to influence the subject—they are regarded as pure. If they are made, they required an appointment or someone the arrange the session.

My photo of the Rooster Lady was found in Katmandu, Nepal. She was unaware that I was photographing her as she stood in line to have her rooster sacrificed at the temple. The Twelve Layer Kimono photo required the help of a fixer to arrange for a young woman to be photographed in a Ginza kimono shop. It took over an hour to get her dressed. While photographing the making of a yak felt yurt, I asked if I could make a portrait. The wife appeared wearing a beautiful coat of wool. Just as I made my picture, out popped Alfred E. Newman and I found a better picture.
